The Education Centre, at Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary is the recognised Post-Graduate Medical Centre for South-West Scotland and is managed by a dedicated team of professional and experienced staff. The centre provides excellent post-graduate facilities, which include a full size lecture theatre, classrooms and a number of tutorial rooms. The facilities are supported with modern audiovisual and information technology, including teleconferencing facilities and incorporate an excellent up-to-date library with a resident librarian.

We enjoy strong links to medical schools and postgraduate centres and welcome students from the Universities of Glasgow (departments of medicine, surgery, trauma and orthopaedics), Edinburgh (departments of geriatrics, psychiatry, paediatrics and obstetrics), and Dundee (department of psychiatry). Our undergraduate education is delivered by a team of committed departmental leads, supported currently by three teaching fellows.

In addition, we have a training programme for General Practitioners and Foundation doctors, other doctors in training spend between 4 months and twelve months in Dumfries as part of programmes based in Edinburgh or Glasgow. National feedback from students and doctors in training rate NHS Dumfries & Galloway placements highly. This reflects our commitment to adding value to our placements by providing opportunities above the minimum expected (examples include quality improvement attachments and a travelling fellowship).

There is also a good programme of teaching in all departments and CPD for primary and secondary care clinicians. Since our teams are relatively small all medical professionals have access to students and the opportunity to get involved in teaching and training on a regular basis. Medical education is overseen by an active education committee, with representation from all specialities and trainee representatives. We also run an active faculty development programme which is aimed at meeting the needs of our educators and trainees.
